How to Track AI Citations in Ahrefs Site Explorer

By UpGeo · 2026-09-04

To track AI answer engine citations in Ahrefs Site Explorer, enter a domain, open Organic keywords, click SERP features, select AI Overview, and set the mode to Where target is cited. You'll get keywords where Google AI Overviews currently cites the target domain, plus search volume, position, traffic, and the page that earned the citation.

Quick scope note before the steps: as of writing, Ahrefs tracks Google AI Overviews as a SERP feature. It doesn't expose ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot answer citations in Site Explorer. If you need that cross-engine visibility, start with a GEO strategy and separate monitoring.

What Ahrefs Site Explorer can show

Ahrefs records AI Overview appearances on tracked Google SERPs and stores which domains and URLs appear as sources. In Site Explorer, you can pull this data from the Organic keywords report and combine the AI Overview SERP feature with target-rank and citation filters.

Step 1: Open the Organic keywords report

  1. Go to Site Explorer and enter your domain.
  2. Pick the Google country database from the dropdown. If you don't see AI Overview data, switch to the United States, where coverage is usually deepest.
  3. Select Organic keywords in the left sidebar.
  4. Click SERP features above the keyword table.

Step 2: Apply the AI Overview citation filter

Inside the SERP features filter, check AI Overview. Ahrefs then asks how the target domain relates to that feature. For citation tracking, choose:

Apply the filter and wait for the table to refresh. That keyword count shows the size of your current AI Overview citation footprint.

Useful filter combinations

Filter setupWhat it showsBest use
AI Overview + Where target is citedKeywords where your domain is an AIO sourceTrack existing citations
AI Overview + Where target ranksKeywords with AI Overviews where you rankDefend current SERP visibility
AI Overview + Where target doesn't rankAI Overviews on SERPs where you lack top organic presenceFind low-ranking citation opportunities
AI Overview + Where target is not citedAI Overviews that ignore your domainPrioritize gap work

Step 3: Read the citation data

The Organic keywords table shows the keyword, search volume, keyword difficulty, position, traffic, and a SERP features flag. The AI Overview flag tells you the feature is present. To see the exact cited URLs, click into the keyword or open the same query in Keywords Explorer and view the AI Overviews sources. In many Ahrefs exports, you can also include the AI Overview source URL and domain columns before exporting.

Pay attention to pages that get cited but rank outside the top 10. Google is treating the page as a source even when it doesn't win a blue link. That happens a lot for definitions, statistics, and original data.

Step 4: Export and segment

  1. Apply your chosen AI Overview filter.
  2. Click Export and choose CSV or Google Sheets.
  3. Add columns for URL, keyword, volume, position, and AI Overview source if available.
  4. Segment by page path or content type: blog, documentation, tool pages, data studies.
  5. Sort by volume or traffic to prioritize fixes.

Competitor citation gap analysis

Run the same citation report for a competitor domain, export the list, and subtract keywords where you already appear as a cited source. That leftover set is your citation gap. Prioritize pages where you already rank top 10 but are not cited — those usually need the smallest content change: add a concise answer, stat, or definition that an AI can lift directly.

Limitations to keep in mind

Turn Ahrefs citations into a GEO action list

Export your cited and uncited keyword lists, then prioritize pages where the content lacks a direct answer, original data, or a clean structure. For broader generative-engine visibility, make your content machine-readable with an llms.txt guide and confirm that AI crawlers can access your key pages by checking an AI crawlers list. You can create the file in minutes with UpGeo's llms.txt generator. Use Ahrefs to find the where and what, then use GEO fixes to increase the citations themselves.
