How to Get Cited in Perplexity for Advisor Comparisons

By UpGeo · 2026-09-02

If you want Perplexity to cite your firm in financial advisor comparison answers, publish comparison pages with exact numbers—fee ranges, account minimums, fiduciary status, credentials, and state availability—and then match that data in the national directories and listicles Perplexity already pulls from, including NerdWallet, SmartAsset, Bankrate, CFP Board, and SEC IAPD. After that, expose those same pages to PerplexityBot through schema, llms.txt, and robots.txt. Perplexity cites extractable financial facts, not vague trust language. This is generative engine optimization applied to finance.

How Perplexity selects financial advisor sources

Perplexity retrieves sources for a query, reads the pages, and synthesizes an answer with inline citations. For financial advisor comparisons, it leans toward pages that already compare options using discrete attributes. A phrase like “we are a trusted advisor” is not citable. A statement like “fee-only CFP, 0.80% AUM, $500,000 minimum, no commissions” is.

The source panel for advisor comparison queries usually contains three source types:

Each source type has its own optimization path.

Step 1: Publish citable comparison pages

Create a hub-and-spoke structure around real comparison intent:

List fees explicitly. Perplexity extracts numbers better from tables and short sentences than from “customized pricing.” Example:

TierAUM feeMinimumService level
Robo0.25%$0Automated portfolios
Hybrid0.60%$50,000Robo plus CFP check-ins
Private wealth0.85%$1,000,000Dedicated CFP, tax, estate

Every row should stand on its own as a citable fact. If you charge flat fees, list the exact annual or monthly amount.

Step 2: Make directory data consistent

Run your priority queries in Perplexity and record the domains in the sources panel. Create or update profiles on every domain that appears for at least two of your queries. For financial advisor comparisons, this usually includes NerdWallet, SmartAsset, Bankrate, Zoe Financial, Datalign, WiserAdvisor, and local business rankings.

Use identical firm name, address, phone, AUM range, fee schedule, minimum, and credentials across your website, directories, SEC IAPD, FINRA BrokerCheck, and CFP Board. Perplexity drops conflicting sources when it cannot reconcile them.

Step 3: Help Perplexity crawl and parse the page

Add FinancialService, OfferCatalog, FAQPage, and Person schema to comparison and advisor pages. Include price ranges, area served, credentials, and review ratings. Structured data gives Perplexity’s extraction pipeline less room to misread.

Create an llms.txt file listing the exact URLs you want answer engines to read: firm profiles, fee pages, comparison pages, advisor bios, and disclosures. Keep it factual and current. Use the llms.txt guide and llms.txt generator if you need a starting point.

In robots.txt, allow PerplexityBot, and verify your pages do not present a bot challenge to its user agent. If PerplexityBot gets blocked, none of this optimization will earn citations. See the AI crawlers list for current user-agent and IP guidance.

Step 4: Write for extraction

Make each claim self-contained and numeric:

Answer these questions in an FAQ block: Are you a fiduciary? Do you earn commissions? What is your minimum? Who is your typical client? Which custodian holds assets? Are you registered in my state? Perplexity often cites FAQ sentences directly.

Step 5: Monitor and refresh monthly

Track 15–25 priority comparison queries in a spreadsheet. Run them weekly, note whether your brand appears, which URL is cited, and which source Perplexity used. If you appear through a directory, keep that profile current. If your own page is cited, avoid restructuring it without checking the linked URLs. If you lose a citation, check the current fee schedule, add a comparison table, or fix contradicting data across directories.

A monthly refresh should update AUM, fees, team credentials, state registrations, review counts, and regulatory disclosures.

Getting cited for advisor comparisons is mostly a data-consistency problem. Build comparison pages with citable numbers, match your data to the directories Perplexity already trusts, expose those pages cleanly through schema, llms.txt, and robots.txt, and keep an eye on the source panel.
